25/05 Moral : Kill For Food

A friend challenged me with a moral question – Would I kill and eat any sentient beings (animals, fish or insects) if I were stranded on an island. After some reflection, I replied “No” firmly. A little puzzled and disappointed, she probed further by asking, “Not even for survival's sake?” I answered “Yes” firmly. This time with disbelief and a hint of anger, she asked why.

Calmly, I told her, “I have no reason to kill those animals for food just becase I want to survive, as they want to survive as much too. Being human(e) does not give any rights to take away the rights of animals or insects.” I further explained, “It's selfish to terminate any life so that I could live a bit longer. Neither is it fair to eat them just because I'm not capable or am too lazy to find other food alternatives. And I see no reason to inject fear in any lifeform, even if it means losing my life.”

She replied cynically that I only said what I did because I'm not in the situation yet. She believes that when one is pushed to the limit, we will do anything to make sure our own survival is guaranteed.

I don't disagree with her about that in general, but I told her I also believe in the power of universal compassion and equanimity for all. I may be a wimp for not being able to pick up the knife to slaughter an animal for food, but at least I'm sure I'm not a coward who chooses to harm the helpless.

It could hardly be put more soundly and compassionately. It is when we act selfish and take away the rights of other creatures to exist for our survival that we allow ourselves to use the same feeble reasonig to take the lives of our fellow human beings. It is the fear of not existing that emboldens us to cease the existenc of others. We need to come to our senses and once and for all abandon hurting other cretures for our own benifits. We have to alter our dieting habits which we have inherited from our hunter gatherer ancesters, so that no harm is done to any creture that senses pain.
Good Luck

I would not kill animals for my own survival too. Someone said a story about a sheep and me on a deserted island, would I kill the sheep? My answer is no. Firstly, I couldn't bear my heart to kill. Secondly, I don't wish to see the animal suffer. Then, even if I eat it, I would still die because there is most probably no water. I assume that if there is water, there would be some form of edible vegetation.

On a selfish reason, I want a decent rebirth and die with dinity. razz You're right. We have no rights to kill the animals for ourselves.
