Satiety

Sounds like ultimate bliss and contentment? Or the nadir of suffering from craving - when craving cannot bring any more joy, not that it can bring any real joy in the first place. If you don't learn to let go of craving at this point, then when?

Gender

How Far



There's this old lady at a temple. Whenever our paths cross, she would put her palms together in reverence to say Amituofo (Chinese name of Amitabha Buddha) as a greeting. Seeing her do that, I would do the same in return. Both of us would be grinning away happily at each other. Once, we were some distance away when I spotted her squinting in my direction. It looked like she was trying to make out whether I was someone she knew. I put my palms together and smiled. But she continued squinting for a while, before dismissing me, turning away. How far will you go to greet someone with the Dharma? If I were her, I would risk being suspected crazy, and put my palms together and smile. Well, maybe strangers need the connection to the Dharma more.

Busy



A woman sat next to me on the train. She was incredibly busy, doing endless small tasks, one after another. First, she figetted to sit comfortably. Next, she flipped through a newspaper impatiently, seemingly not really reading any news or genuinely interested in any article, not knowing what to expect while going through motion as if it is simply something she had to do, as part of her routine. Next, she ruffled through her handbag to arrange some stuff. Just when I thought she had finished, she went through it again, this time, pulling out a tumbler to drink some coffee. Just when she was about settled with "nothing" to do, her stop was here. Is this a summary of modern life? What are you busying about? Where are you rushing to? We need a wider vision, and not get caught up only in small circles of going to and from from work and play. The feeling of being busy is itself a sign that something is wrong - because it is a feeling of running out of time, forgetting to live in the moment and enjoy it as it is, even in the midst of work. Even with 1001 things to do in a day, let's do them all in good time.

Blocker



I see a man standing smack in front of the subway door in the train during peak hour. When she has to move aside to let commuters in and out, she wore a displeased scowl on her face. It's funny she saw others being in her way when it was the other way round. After letting others pass through, she would shift herself back to her central blocking position. This is another classic example of thinking the whole wide world is wrong while oneself is right - the failure of looking at one's own fault. The moment we see others having faults, the first question to ask ourselves is whether is is our faulty perception that led us to see these faults. You'll be surprised how often it is our fault more than others'. 

The truth is, we are always in each other's way now and then. The tricky part is trying to be more mindful not to be in others' way, and learning to see others being in our way as a golden opportunity to train our patience.

Re: (No Subject)



When you reply to an untitled email, the recipient sometimes gets the reply with the above as the subject header. It's funny to me - that "no subject" has to be the subject. If the sender did not need a subject when he sent it, will he need a "changed" subject back? Will he recognise it? Sometimes automated help without much thought is less than helpful?

Anyway, I do like the replied header of no header. The world, like the email IS "Re: (no subject)" indeed. What do I mean? The world is "regarding" what seems to be whole things, people and matters - thus the parenthesis "( )". Yet in each, there is "no subject" - for all is changing. Because everything is "subject" to change, there is "no subject" - no self - Anatta.

A rule of thumb when sharing the task of web-updating - Whenever amending any webpage, always download the version online first - in case the one in your harddisk is not the latest, or if someone else had just edited and uploaded that particular page.

Likewise, when you are updating yourself on someone or some matter, remember to "download" the "live version", instead up updating based on outdated, prejudiced and obsolete versions. It's only fair to both parties.

I think many confuse sex with love, love with roses, war with might, violence with power... Isn't it all Greed and hatred from Ignorance? Isn't it ironic that material with sex and violence is for "mature" adults only, for entertainment, when the spiritually mature gives up the duo?

Cold Wakefulness



Sometimes, the lecturer drones on and on and I almost fall asleep. Am grateful that the sweeping air-conditioner flap directs some cold air to me periodically. It keeps me awake. Makes me think of myself being too comfortable and complacent like the gods, needing a pang of suffering once a while as a wake-up call to be mindful, to wake up, physically and spiritually.

Small Talk



Attending a short class with strangers, and I shy from them during tea breaks and lunch time. I see no much value in making small talk and striking up short relationships with people I am not genuinely interested in. But hey! Am I short-sighted! Orchestra



I see some guys from Singapore Chinese Orchestra performing drums on TV. They were straining hard, looking at their music scores. They seem afraid to miss a beat. So tense that they don't seem to be enjoy playing their part, much less appreciating the masterpiece they are part of. I think it is tragic- when musicians forget to busk in their own music and have fun. In taking care of the details, let us not forget the big picture.
